The Ghatkopar–Andheri–Versova Metro 1 corridor, one of Mumbai’s busiest transport routes, may soon see relief from peak-hour crowding as Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) plans to introduce six-coach trains.

With daily ridership exceeding five lakh passengers, the existing four-coach trains are struggling to accommodate commuters during rush hours, particularly at high-traffic stations such as Andheri, Western Express Highway and Ghatkopar.

MMOPL has submitted a detailed proposal for the upgrade to the National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL) via the India Debt Resolution Company Limited (IDRCL). Once approved, the addition of two new coaches per train will significantly enhance passenger capacity and improve comfort.

The expansion is also expected to streamline frequency and passenger flow ahead of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 launch, which will connect with Metro 1 at Marol station, further boosting footfall on the line.

Officials from MMOPL stated that the six-coach configuration will not only address long-standing commuter demands but also enhance the efficiency and reliability of Mumbai’s first metro corridor, operational since 2014.
