Namo Bharat Can Run Trains Every Three Minutes If Required

The Namo Bharat corridor is currently carrying around 0.1 million (mn) passengers daily, with trains operating at intervals of about 10 minutes and the flexibility to increase frequency to three minutes if required, NCRTC managing director Shalabh Goel said in an interview to PTI. He said the corporation continuously assesses travel demand across the corridor and makes operational adjustments to meet patronage.

Considering rising commuter demand, the corporation has introduced 18 additional trips during peak hours between Sarai Kale Khan and Meerut South. The corridor has recorded steady growth in ridership, with cumulative journeys crossing 35 mn since opening. Goel said 100 per cent of the Namo Bharat trainsets are manufactured in Savli, Gujarat, reinforcing domestic production.

NCRTC has focused on integrating Namo Bharat stations with other modes of public transport, including Indian Railways, metro systems, inter-state bus terminals and city bus services where feasible. The operationalisation of a foot over bridge equipped with travelators connecting Sarai Kale Khan Namo Bharat station with Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station in May 2026 resulted in about a 30 per cent increase in footfall. Similar seamless links have been provided with metro stations at New Ashok Nagar and Ghaziabad, while Anand Vihar offers interchange with the railway station, ISBT, the Delhi Metro and city bus services.

Goel said these interventions have eased congestion around transit facilities and reduced pedestrian movement on busy roads, and stations offering such multimodal connectivity account for nearly 40 per cent of corridor ridership. He added that large-scale transit projects such as Namo Bharat are planned with a long-term horizon and that the corridor was designed with flexibility for future capacity augmentation to cater to growing demand.

NCRTC has developed end-to-end expertise across planning, design, finance, construction, operation and maintenance, and has deployed new technologies including the global first ETCS Level 2 Hybrid Level 3 over LTE radio signalling technology adapted to Indian conditions. This experience positions the corporation to support similar projects elsewhere and to encourage a modal shift from private vehicles by improving accessibility and convenience.
