PM Modi flags off Kanpur Metro stretch built by Afcons
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 5-km stretch of the Kanpur Metro on 30 May 2025, which includes the Kanpur Central underground station constructed by Afcons Infrastructure.
The stretch is part of the KNPCC-06 package, awarded to an Afcons-led consortium on March 14, 2022. This package involves the design and construction of a 3.826-km underground corridor with three stations—Kanpur Central, Jhakarkatti, and Transport Nagar—along with twin tunnels constructed using two shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
Tunnelling work along this corridor was particularly challenging due to the proximity of dilapidated structures. Despite these hurdles, Afcons completed the work safely and efficiently. Construction of the Kanpur Central station began in December 2022, while tunnelling between Kanpur Central and Nawabganj started in August 2023; both have now been completed.
Afcons has been associated with Kanpur Metro since the early phases, having executed the elevated Priority Section under package KNPCC-02. This included a viaduct and nine stations from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel, commissioned in June 2021 despite COVID-19-related disruptions.
With metro projects in over 10 Indian cities, Afcons has delivered landmark infrastructure, including India’s first underwater tunnel in Kolkata and the four-layer Nagpur Metro system.
