Southern Railway (SR) has invited bids for construction of the fifth and sixth railway line between Villivakkam and Ambattur in Chennai, aiming to expand capacity on a heavily used suburban corridor. The tender covers elevated and at?grade sections along the alignment and seeks contractors for track laying, earthworks, bridge structures, drainage and signalling integration with existing lines. The authority has framed technical specifications and contract conditions in line with standard Indian Railways procurement practices to attract firms capable of complex urban rail works.

The additional paired tracks are intended to separate slow and fast suburban services and create dedicated paths for freight and long?distance trains, thereby reducing bottlenecks and improving punctuality. Project delivery is expected to enable more frequent suburban services and smoother operations during peak hours, which should support commuters and reduce overcrowding. Capacity augmentation along this stretch will also improve operational resilience when maintenance or emergency interventions are required on the existing lines.

The corridor between Villivakkam and Ambattur traverses mixed residential and industrial neighbourhoods where rail remains a principal mode of travel, and the works are designed to minimise disruption to street traffic and local pedestrians. Contractors will be required to implement site safety, traffic management and environmental safeguards as part of contract obligations. The railway administration will co?ordinate with municipal authorities on access, utility diversions and phased construction to limit impact on daily commuters and nearby businesses.

Procurement notices and detailed bid documents have been published on the railway tender portal and interested firms are being invited to submit proposals within the stipulated timelines.
