Patna Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Patna Metro) will add three new trains to its fleet, with all three rakes due to arrive from Pune by December 2026. Unlike the existing three-coach rolling stock, the new trains comprise six coaches and will almost double per-train capacity. The sets will be leased at a combined cost of around Rs 630 million (mn).

The trains were originally built for Pune Metro by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (Titagarh Rail Systems) and are intended to operate on the elevated sections of Corridor I, also known as the Red Line. The decision to lease existing stock reflects compatibility between systems, since both cities use standard-gauge track and a 25 kV AC overhead power system. Titagarh Rail Systems had ready stock available, enabling faster deployment than commissioning new builds.

Each six-coach train can carry about 1,800 passengers, seated and standing, compared with roughly 940 passengers on the present three-coach sets. The three-coach train currently operating in Patna was likewise leased from Pune Metro for a three year period. In mid-2025 the Bihar Cabinet authorised Rs 211.5 million (mn) to cover that lease.

Patna Metro described the lease arrangement as a practical bridge solution that will expand services without the long lead times of new manufacture. The availability of ready rakes means the corporation can increase capacity on key corridors within months rather than years. Operational deployment will focus on elevated stretches where the rolling stock and power arrangements match existing infrastructure.

At present Patna Metro runs on a six point three kilometre stretch between Patliputra Inter-State Bus Terminal and Malahi Pakri, and Khemnichak station is expected to open by the end of 2026 to link Corridor I and Corridor II. Once the three six-coach rakes are in place, service frequency and capacity on Corridor I should be strengthened. Further decisions on timetabling and passenger services will follow as the leased trains are commissioned.
