The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has sanctioned a second rail cum road bridge in Guwahati over the Brahmaputra River as part of the doubling of the Agthori–Kamakhya railway line, with completion targeted for December 2029. NFR spokesperson Kapinjal Kishore Sharma provided the project overview and approval timeline to the press. The project was approved in the 2023–24 financial year with a sanctioned estimate of Rs 14,737.7 million (mn).

Detailed estimates for the bridge were approved by the Railway Board in February 2024, and the design, drawing and report were finalised and cleared by the competent authority in March 2025. Geotechnical investigations required for designing the substructure and superstructure have been completed and an engineering, procurement and construction contract tender has been floated for the bridge, rail viaducts, approach roads, earthwork and ancillary works. The tender is expected to be finalised shortly, after which construction will commence.

The seven point zero six two km-long project will feature a one point three km-long steel composite girder bridge across the river, carrying a double-line railway track on the lower deck and a three-lane roadway with footpaths on the upper deck. Its two point six nine four km north-end approach will connect to Agthori station while the three point zero seven km south-end approach will link to Kamakhya station.

The new bridge is expected to improve connectivity and significantly enhance line capacity in the corridor, which is poised for industrial growth. The structure is intended to relieve congestion on existing crossings and to support multimodal transport across the river. The project is also likely to generate employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers in nearby areas and is intended to support future traffic and economic expansion.
