India to build first polar research vessel with Norway’s Kongsberg

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has signed an MoU with Norway’s Kongsberg to develop India’s first Polar Research Vessel. The announcement was made during the Nor-Shipping 2025 event in Norway. The vessel will support the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research in conducting studies in polar and southern oceans. GRSE will build the ship in Kolkata with technical input from Kongsberg. The initiative aligns with the ‘Make in India’ push and aims to boost India’s polar research capacity. It is also part of India’s broader maritime strategy under Sagarmala 2.0 and the MAHASAGAR vision.
