India's Major Ports collectively handled 915.17 million tonnes (mn t) of cargo in fiscal year 2025–26, exceeding the annual target of 904 mn t and registering year-on-year growth of seven point zero six per cent. The performance reflects a sustained recovery and operational efficiencies achieved through reforms and strategic investments. The result was presented by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways as a milestone under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.\n\nDeendayal Port Authority emerged as the top performer with 160.11 mn t, followed by Paradip Port Authority with 156.45 mn t and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority with 102.01 mn t. Other significant contributors included Visakhapatnam Port Authority, Mumbai Port Authority, Chennai Port Authority and New Mangalore Port Authority. The distribution of throughput across these ports underpinned the aggregate gain.\n\nIn terms of growth rates, Mormugao Port Authority recorded the highest increase at 15.91 per cent, followed by Kolkata Dock System at 14.28 per cent and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 10.74 per cent. The ministry credited capacity augmentation, modernisation of port infrastructure and strengthened multimodal connectivity for the improved performance. Adoption of digital and smart port initiatives and reductions in turnaround time supported higher handling of key commodities such as coal, crude oil, containers, fertilisers and petroleum, oil and lubricants.\n\nThe sustained momentum in cargo handling was attributed to effective policy measures and continued investment in logistics integration and sustainability. Officials indicated that with ongoing reforms and infrastructure projects the Major Ports are well positioned to scale new milestones and contribute materially to national economic growth and India’s global trade leadership under the maritime vision. Continued focus on operational efficiency and hinterland linkages is expected to support further gains.
