Paradip Port Berths First Capesize Vessel With 16.5-Metre Draft

Paradip Port Authority has berthed MV Mineral Kwangyang, the port's first Capesize vessel with a 16.5-metre draft, at Western Dock-1. The 292-metre vessel arrived from Hay Point, Australia, carrying 152,702 tonnes (t) of coking coal and marked a significant milestone in the authority's deep-draft vessel handling capability. The event followed planned operational tests and berth preparations to accommodate larger vessels. Port officials described the call as a validation of recent dredging and infrastructure upgrades.\n\nSusanta Kumar Purohit, Chairperson of Paradip Port Authority, congratulated Team PPA and Team JPPL on the achievement and highlighted coordinated efforts across operations and navigation teams. The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways earlier inaugurated seven major infrastructure projects totalling Rs 4,278 million (mn), underlining the port's attainment of an 18.5-metre deep-draft capability and a one millionth tree milestone. The minister also witnessed the signing of concession agreements for three mechanisation projects valued at Rs 15,803.6 mn aimed at strengthening capacity, efficiency and cargo handling.\n\nAccording to a ministry release, the projects span navigation, connectivity, safety, sustainability, residential infrastructure and community development, with the mechanisation projects specifically designed to improve cargo handling and reduce vessel turnaround time. Authorities noted that investments will support modernisation of quays, equipment and hinterland links. The programme is intended to enhance operational resilience and environmental compliance.\n\nOfficials said the expansion is intended to position Paradip as a major maritime gateway for the eastern region and to create wider economic opportunities across states in eastern India. The improvements in draft, mechanisation and connectivity are expected to act as a growth multiplier for trade, logistics, industry and employment. The port authority indicated that continued investment will help to attract larger cargo volumes and support the region's integration into global maritime networks.
