Paras Defence Secures Rs 800 mn DRDO Contract

Paras Defence and Space Tech (Paras Defence) has secured a Rs 800 mn contract from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to supply an air defence optical system. The order is aimed at strengthening surveillance and target acquisition capabilities for mobile air defence platforms. The procurement represents a further step in the company's expansion into advanced electro-optical solutions for defence applications.

The contract will require Paras Defence to undertake design, development and system integration work for the optical payload, sensors and associated electronics. The scope includes testing and delivery of prototype units followed by production of serial sets as per contractual milestones. The firm will work with domestic suppliers to source components and carry out assembly and calibration activities. The programme is part of broader efforts to modernise air defence architecture and to enhance indigenous manufacturing capabilities.

The Rs 800 mn award improves the firm's order visibility and is expected to support near term revenue, operational scaling and incremental manufacturing utilisation. Company executives indicated that the project aligns with its strategic focus on indigenous defence technologies and building supply chains within the country. The contract also serves to deepen partnerships between private defence firms and the defence research establishment. The award could also encourage tiered suppliers to invest in specialised test facilities and quality assurance processes.

The deal may bolster investor confidence in the domestic defence sector and reaffirm demand for electro optical systems in modern air defence solutions. Analysts say follow on orders could emerge as integrators seek locally developed subsystems to reduce acquisition cycles. Paras Defence will now move into execution phase as it mobilises resources and coordinates with the DRDO for validation and delivery and timely completion. Delivery schedules and acceptance criteria are set out in the contract and will be monitored through joint review mechanisms.
