Vietnam’s Vingroup is exploring opportunities to develop smart cities across several Indian states and is in discussions with the Maharashtra government, according to senior company officials.

The Maharashtra government has offered land in Pune for the proposed project. However, Vingroup is evaluating cities with a population of at least one million for its smart city developments and is not considering Mumbai as a potential location, said Pham Sanh Chau, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Vingroup Asia Operations.

The proposed smart cities are expected to feature integrated urban developments, including residential housing, hospitals, shopping centres, schools and electric mobility infrastructure. The projects are likely to follow the model of Vinhomes Smart City in Hanoi, one of the group’s flagship urban development initiatives in Vietnam.

Vingroup’s interest in India comes amid the rapid expansion of its automobile arm, VinFast, in the country’s electric vehicle segment. The company’s potential entry into India’s smart city space reflects its broader strategy to strengthen its presence in large-scale infrastructure and urban development projects.

If finalised, the smart city initiative could contribute to Maharashtra’s urban transformation agenda and attract significant foreign investment into the state’s real estate and infrastructure sectors.
