Assam Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Kaushik Rai visited the Boragaon waste dumping ground in Guwahati on August 31 and reviewed plans for reuse and recycling with departmental officials. The visit underscored a renewed emphasis on scientific waste management across the city and the practical utilisation of combustible waste to reduce landfill pressures. Officials outlined ongoing measures to segregate, process and repurpose municipal refuse while assessing site conditions and resource requirements. The review aimed to accelerate steps towards a cleaner, waste-free Guwahati.

He was accompanied by Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Mayor Mrigen Sarania, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs Dr Jeevan B and GMC Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phookan, along with other senior officials. The delegation examined current collection streams and discussed enhancements to transfer and processing chains. Technical officers presented proposals for segregated collection, composting of organics and energy recovery from combustible fractions. The approach focussed on pragmatic, scalable interventions rather than theoretical plans.

Discussions highlighted methods to make better use of combustible waste, including segregated burning alternatives where safe and compliant technologies are available, and options for mechanical processing to extract recyclable fractions. Officials considered capacity needs for material recovery facilities and training requirements for frontline staff and contractors. The minister directed a prioritisation of scientific protocols, monitoring frameworks and timelines for pilot schemes. There was an emphasis on coordinating with local communities and waste workers to ensure effective implementation.

The visit forms part of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation's continuing efforts to enhance urban cleanliness, improve resource recovery and reduce dependence on open dumping. Authorities signalled plans for follow-up inspections and targeted investments in infrastructure and equipment to support recycling and reuse pathways. The minister asked for progress reports and clear milestones to monitor outcomes. Officials were asked to align initiatives with broader state objectives for sustainable urban management.
