GHMC Repairs 105 Potholes And Clears 173.2 t Waste

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) reported repairs to 105 potholes across city roads on the second day of a special monsoon drive. Teams removed 126.6 metric tonnes (t) of legacy municipal solid waste and 46.6 metric tonnes (t) of construction and demolition waste, amounting to 173.2 t in total. The operation formed part of a coordinated effort to reduce waterlogging and improve drainage ahead of heavier rains.

Work was coordinated across multiple wards to ensure rapid response and coverage. Teams also cleared 65 catch pits and two culverts, and removed 11.9 t of floating material and silt from nalas to ensure flow was maintained. The civic squads focused on targeted cleaning of storm channels and minor drains in low-lying neighbourhoods to lower flood risk.

Cleaning teams used routine schedules and complaint data to target high priority stretches. Works were prioritised where complaints and historical inundation records indicated vulnerability. GHMC personnel installed 107 commercial bins at shops, constructed one rainwater harvesting structure and carried out awareness programmes in 18 schools for 700 students on the responsibilities of Bulk Waste Generators (BWG).

The outreach explained compliance requirements under updated municipal and national solid waste regulations and encouraged segregation at source. The outreach also sought to inform local shopkeepers and residents about proper disposal practices. Officials described the school visits and bin installations as key steps towards sustained behaviour change.

The drive also included pruning of 47.5 t of tree branches and the removal of 10.45 t of dry and green waste from 34 parks to keep public spaces safe and drains clear. Authorities indicated the special monsoon drive will continue until August 21 as teams rotate through wards to sustain momentum. GHMC said further assessments would guide subsequent rounds of targeted interventions.
