The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has finalised plans to establish its fifth Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste processing plant at Tehkhand, aimed at strengthening the city’s solid waste management infrastructure and mitigating road dust pollution.

The upcoming facility will have a processing capacity of 1,000 tonnes per day (TPD), helping to bridge the current gap between C&D waste generation and processing. Once operational, it will raise Delhi’s total processing capacity to 6,000 TPD, with provisions to expand further up to 2,000 TPD in the future. The project is slated for completion within a year.

In a parallel effort to enhance waste segregation and recycling, the MCD has also issued Letters of Intent (LoIs) for setting up 14 new Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) across the city. These centres will enable segregation and processing of waste at the source, significantly reducing the load on landfills.

Delhi currently generates around 6,000 metric tonne of C&D waste daily. The four existing MCD plants at Bakkarwala, Jahangirpuri, Rani Khera, and Shastri Park collectively process approximately 5,000 TPD. The addition of the Tehkhand facility will help the civic body achieve full processing of the city’s C&D waste, ensuring more sustainable and cleaner urban development.

An MCD official said the initiative underscores the corporation’s commitment to sustainable waste management, environmental protection, and efficient recycling practices aligned with national clean city objectives.
