Lok Sabha member Dilip Saikia set out a development agenda for Silchar that prioritises tackling waterlogging, strengthening drainage, improving waste management, easing traffic congestion and upgrading public infrastructure. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had received 249 nominations for the 42 wards of the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and that the party would focus on improving civic infrastructure and making essential services more accessible. The proposals were outlined at a press conference where he identified implementation priorities.

To tackle recurring waterlogging during the monsoon, he said plans would be drawn to install pumping stations in vulnerable localities such as Shillong Patti, Ambika Patti, Malugram, Tarapur, Rangirkhari, Sonai Road, Link Road, Saratpally and Bilpar. The programme would widen and deepen the Rangirkhal, Baris Canal and Langai Canal and link them with the Ghagra and Barak rivers to boost drainage capacity. Covered reinforced cement concrete drains would be installed across wards with regular cleaning and maintenance planned.

Waste management forms a central component of the plan and aims to ensure 100 per cent door-to-door garbage collection alongside segregation at source. The system would be monitored through QR codes to improve tracking and accountability of collection services. To ease traffic congestion the proposals envisage designated parking zones, dedicated e-rickshaw stands, improved footpaths, expanded street lighting and the installation of CCTV cameras across busy corridors. The agenda also proposes construction of multi-storey parking facilities to address long term parking deficits.

Further measures include establishing skill development centres for young people and creating safe public spaces for senior citizens, women and persons with disabilities. Service centres are proposed in every ward to enable residents to access civic and public services more conveniently and to centralise grievance redressal. Saikia reported that 50 All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and supporters had joined the BJP in his presence, which he said reflected local realignment ahead of municipal work. The party indicated that detailed project timelines and funding arrangements would be prepared for phased implementation.
