Covid-19 second wave: BEML starts manufacturing medical oxygen units

01 Jun 2021

Defence public sector undertaking BEML Ltd, previously Bharat Earth Movers Ltd, has started manufacturing 960 LMP medical oxygen units at its KGF complex to help the country's oxygen shortage scenario.

Several industry sectors have stepped in to help the country in the fight against the second wave of the Covid-19. Steel, cement, equipment, and other sectors have diverted oxygen for emergency medical use, with equipment company BEML stepping into oxygen manufacturing recently.

The oxygen units have been set up under a transfer of technology agreement with Defence Bio-Engineering and Electro Medical Laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

According to a release, the first set of units has been rolled out and is being delivered to the Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences. BEML received orders for 100 units in May 2021 under the PM Cares fund, and they will be supplied by the end of July.

The release said that BEML is also establishing a 960 LPM capacity medical oxygen unit in coordination with the district-level medical authorities, in one of the designated hospitals in Karnataka under CSR.

Headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, BEML Ltd, previously Bharat Earth Movers Ltd, is an Indian public sector undertaking (PSU). It manufactures various heavy equipment, such as those used for earthmoving, transport, and mining.
