Delhi's initial TOD hub to complete EWS housing by end of February

01 Feb 2024

The completion of the economically weaker section (EWS) housing component at Karkardooma, the city's inaugural integrated transit-oriented development (TOD) hub, is scheduled for February 28. This section encompasses 498 flats across 22 floors, along with basement parking facilities.

An official from the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) reported, "The construction work on the flats has concluded, and we are currently engaged in the external development of the complex." The NBCC, serving as the implementing agency for the project, is actively working on an approach road to the EWS tower, with sewer connectivity to be established soon. The power supply is being arranged through BSES Yamuna, as stated by the official.

Starting from the end of February, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) plans to promote the project before commencing the allotment process for the general public. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, who recently assessed the project's progress, expressed his viewpoint, stating, "The Karkardooma TOD project has the potential to not only alter the skyline of East Delhi but also bring about unprecedented socio-economic changes in the area. The hub is designed to facilitate a seamless interplay between residential and commercial development in an inclusive manner, specifically catering to EWS requirements."

Following a meeting with DDA officials in February of the previous year, the LG conveyed that efforts would be made to complete phase I of the project by March of the current year. An official explained, "Work faced interruptions due to regular bans on construction, the Covid pandemic, and restrictions on working hours resulting from extremely cold weather."
