The implementing authority, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), has finalized a detailed project report (DPR) for the extension of the Metro 3 underground corridor up to Navy Nagar, Colaba. It has been mentioned that the extension, if approved, would result in at least four additional stabling lines, supplementing the ones already planned for the eco-sensitive Aarey area. This extension is expected to contribute to the increased capacity of the Metro.
The extension plan encompasses a 33.5 km length of the Metro 3 corridor from Cuffe Parade to Aarey, passing through Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The timeline for the extension project is set at 30 months, starting from the commencement of work on the ground. The proposed extension covers a distance of 2.5 km, and it is designed to be underground. This includes 1.5 km leading up to the proposed Navy Nagar station and an additional 1 km for the train reversal facility, allowing movement from the Up to Down line track.
The demand for this project stems from the Navy, which has approximately 1 lakh residents, including a floating population, in Navy Nagar. Naval authorities believe that Metro services would better serve the inhabitants compared to the current reliance on BEST buses, personal vehicles, and taxis, especially in one of the most congested areas of south Mumbai. In response to this demand, the Ministry of Defence approached the state government, requesting the operation of Metro 3 services from Navy Nagar. Subsequently, the proposal was forwarded to MMRC, and the board of MMRC has granted approval for the extension.
