Under the leadership of Satish Paretkar, Director, Hydro & Underground BU, Afcons Infrastructure recently completed construction of the Rohtang Pass Highway Tunnel, now called the Atal Tunnel. It is the world's longest motorable tunnel 3,000 m above sea level. The tunnel is 8.8-km-long and passes right under the belly of the treacherous Rohtang Pass. The tunnel is a JV between Afcons and Strabag AG. The all-weather tunnel is expected to reduce travelling distance of 46 km and travel time by four to five hours between Manali and Lahaul-Spiti. What’s more, it will end the social isolation of people cut off by snow-laden Rohtang pass for six months every year.
