01 Feb 2021

A proposal to expand the terminal building at Madurai airport is ready and awaiting approvals. The work is expected to cost Rs.3000 mn. It will commence in nine months and will be completed in one year after commencement. The existing terminal will be expanded 30 m on both sides to accommodate 2,600 passengers. At present it can accommodate only 700 passengers. Land acquisition for runway expansion will be completed soon. An underpass for the new runway is considered best suited for the Madurai airport. While the AAI will take up runway expansion at a cost of Rs.8000 mn, the state government has to take up the underpass construction. The construction of a new Air Traffic Control tower proposed will also begin soon.
