Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has directed Energy Department officials to arrange coal from Mahanadi Coalfields and Coal India after generation at the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant was halted because of shortages. He also instructed Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka to meet Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy to discuss the crisis and secure supplies for the state’s thermal power units.

During a review meeting, Reddy directed officials of TGGENCO to restore generation at the plant’s full installed capacity before Dasara. He sought details on the availability and quality of coal required by thermal stations, while officials explained that Yadadri’s units need G9 grade coal for operations.

Officials said Singareni did not have the coal blocks needed to produce G9 grade coal and was unlikely to generate the required grade in the near future. They also said Singareni could not supply the fuel because the previous government had not participated in central auctions for the necessary blocks. Fourteen coal blocks at Singareni have already been closed, according to the briefing.

The chief minister questioned the decision to build Yadadri using technology dependent on G9 coal despite its limited availability from Singareni. The meeting also examined the plant’s location away from the pithead, or the area adjoining coal mines, and the resulting logistics costs incurred by the state government.

Officials attributed the plant’s distance from the mines to political reasons during the previous BRS administration. They identified inadequate coal availability as the primary reason the facility had not achieved full-scale generation. Official reports placed the additional burden of supplying coal to the thermal centre at Rs. 400 bn, prompting the government to explore supplies from other coal producers.
