Natural gas production at the KG-D6 fields operated by Reliance Industries Ltd and BP Plc fell nearly seven per cent year-on-year in the April to June quarter, extending a decline that began in mid-2025. Reliance reported output averaged 24.8 million (mn) standard cubic metres per day in the quarter, down from 26.6 mn in April to June 2025 and below 25.2 mn in the January to March quarter. The company said it had not provided further details on volumes or a timeline to arrest the decline.

Production from second-wave discoveries in KG-D6 peaked in the January to March 2024 quarter at 30.6 mn standard cubic metres per day and has since fallen by 19 per cent. Reliance holds a sixty six point six seven per cent stake as operator while BP holds the remaining thirty three point three three per cent. The operator has recorded nineteen gas discoveries and the MA oilfield ceased production in September 2018, with D-1 and D-3 stopping in February 2020.

Reliance attributed sharper than anticipated declines at early wells to unanticipated water and sand ingress and said BP was brought in as a technical partner in 2011 to assist production. The companies invested about $5 bn to bring three deepwater gas projects into production — R-Cluster, Satellite Cluster and MJ — with R-Cluster starting in December 2020, Satellite Cluster in April 2021 and MJ in June 2023. At peak the three projects were intended to meet about fifteen per cent of India’s natural gas demand.

India currently consumes around 200 mn standard cubic metres per day of gas. Reliance reported it received $8.89 per million British thermal unit for gas sold in the quarter, down from $9.97 a year earlier, and realised $107.4 per barrel for oil and condensate, up from $69.9 a barrel a year earlier. The company indicated BP has also been engaged by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation to provide technical assistance on western offshore fields including Mumbai High.
