Five Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are operational in Gujarat, including the installation at Modhera, and collectively they provide 870 MW of capacity. The installation at Modhera, which is part of India's first Solar Village initiative, marked the first BESS integrated with a solar power plant in the country and was advanced under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. The state has also commissioned systems at Mehsana and Lakhpat and recently brought a unit online at Charal in Sanand taluka of Ahmedabad.

Thirteen projects are registered across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Banaskantha, Patan and Kutch to expand battery storage capacity, and the state government has included advanced energy storage prominently in the Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy, 2025. The policy framework allows standalone battery projects, projects linked with new renewable energy installations and those integrated with existing systems to be approved. Once a standard operating procedure is finalised, registrations will open for commercial and industrial users to install battery storage alongside their solar or wind projects.

Battery energy storage systems store excess electricity generated by solar and other renewable sources during the day and release it when demand peaks in the evening, reducing reliance on immediate thermal generation. The systems are installed close to renewable projects to enable quick storage of surplus power while minimising transmission losses and wastage, and they are expected to support voltage and frequency regulation as well as serve as emergency backup. The state has invited companies through a competitive bidding process and transmission and distribution agencies identify sites for deployment based on grid capacity and operational requirements.

Officials said these efforts will contribute to India's target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and will help manage peak power demand while enhancing grid resilience. With policy support and additional projects in the pipeline, Gujarat aims to strengthen its role in the national energy storage landscape and to provide reliable relief during demand surges. The state government continues to advance installations to support a cleaner and more stable power system.
