Tripura has crossed a key renewable energy milestone, with cumulative rooftop solar capacity under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana surpassing 15 megawatt (MW) as of July 27, 2026. Official data showed completed installations in 4,460 households, delivering a cumulative installed capacity of 15,300 kilowatt peak, equivalent to 15.3 MW. The scheme permits households to generate electricity for their own consumption while supplying surplus to the grid through net metering.

Data indicated 17,330 applications were registered in the state, of which 7,846 had been submitted, representing a proposed solar capacity of 24,733 kilowatt (kW) or roughly 24.733 MW. Authorities outlined efforts to expand access by simplifying application and installation processes and encouraging utilisation of vacant rooftops. Implementation is overseen by Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited under its managing director, with guidance from the state power minister and power secretary.

So far, 3,853 consumers have received subsidies totalling Rs 325.2 million (mn), which has lowered upfront costs and household electricity expenses. The programme has been described by officials as gradually transforming consumers into power producers and reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources. The state government continues to process applications and promote rooftop adoption to bring more households under the renewable initiative.

During the April to June 2026 quarter, 1,679 consumers reduced their electricity bills to zero and became eligible to earn a combined Rs zero point five seven nine million (mn) by supplying surplus electricity to the grid, and officials indicated the amount will be credited to accounts shortly. The initiative offers lower bills, government subsidies and an opportunity to earn additional income, advancing a cleaner, decentralised energy future for Tripura. With over 4,460 installations operational and thousands more in the pipeline, rooftop solar is playing an increasingly important role in the state energy mix.
