Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inspected the Border Security Force (BSF) Lankamura Border Outpost in Tripura and interacted with frontline personnel to boost morale. The visit in Agartala on World Environment Day included the planting of an agar sapling and attendance by Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, the Union Home Secretary, the Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the Secretary for Border Management and the Director General of the BSF. The minister also e-inaugurated personnel accommodation at the 37th Battalion and laid the e-foundation for the Quarter Guard complex at the 97th Battalion.

Personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have planted more than 75 million (mn) trees since 2019 and will continue the drive. For the current year the minister indicated that between four million (mn) and six million (mn) saplings will be planted, with any that do not survive to be replanted, and that CAPF personnel will target 20 million (mn) trees in the next year. The minister stressed that sapling care should become a natural habit rather than a programme driven by orders.

The minister outlined plans for smart borders and a pilot project at seven or eight locations that will integrate local administration with technology. A quadrilateral security strategy will link district magistrates, superintendents of police, village patwaris and sarpanches with sensors, drones and smart fencing to create a leak-proof security grid. The government has approved the installation of 119 kilometres of new fencing to replace part of approximately 650 kilometres of fencing that is over 15 years old.

The minister said the Border Security Force confronts narcotics, human trafficking, arms smuggling and drone threats across Tripura, West Bengal and Bihar and that modernisation of outposts includes electricity, green energy and safe drinking water. The government has undertaken e-inaugurations and projects to improve housing and family facilities for personnel. He linked these measures with the wider goal of making India secure to achieve a fully developed nation by 2047 under the Prime Minister's vision.
