The centre has confirmed that 98 per cent of projects under the Jammu Smart City initiative have been completed, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu informed the Rajya Sabha. The projects were implemented under the Smart Cities Mission launched by the Government led by Narendra Modi and were intended to transform urban infrastructure and civic amenities in Jammu. The minister provided a progress update in response to parliamentary queries and outlined the programme's objectives.

Tokhan Sahu was responding to an unstarred question by Sat Sharma, Jammu and Kashmir Bharatiya Janata Party president and member of the Rajya Sabha, on the progress and outcomes of the mission. He set out works covering water supply, sewerage, urban transport, public spaces and information and communication services. Authorities reported that the completed interventions aligned with urban planning priorities and sustainability goals while municipal agencies coordinated implementation and monitored key performance indicators.

The centre has allocated Rs 489 crore to the Jammu Smart City programme, which converts to 4.89 billion (bn) under the standard conversion used in official reporting, and most funds have been channelled into construction and service improvements. Work on citizen grievance redressal mechanisms and digital platforms has progressed and is expected to streamline access to municipal services. Officials said investments targeted congestion reduction, sanitation improvement and pedestrian safety in central and neighbourhood areas.

Remaining works amount to roughly two per cent and are subject to final inspections and commissioning before handover to local bodies, according to the ministerial synopsis. Lawmakers urged continued oversight to ensure timely completion and sustained maintenance of assets delivered under the programme. The centre indicated that ongoing monitoring and stakeholder engagement would be prioritised to secure intended benefits for residents and businesses.
