MHI to Design Japan’s Largest CO₂ Capture Plant

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been awarded the FEED contract for Japan’s largest CO₂ capture plant at Hokkaido Electric Power’s Tomato-Atsuma station. The facility will use MHI’s proprietary technology to capture 5,200 tonnes of CO₂ daily. The captured CO₂ will be stored offshore near Tomakomai under JOGMEC’s advanced CCS initiative. The project, targeting 1.5–2 million tonnes of annual storage by 2030, marks a key step in Japan’s carbon neutrality push and aligns with MHI’s global CCUS strategy.
