The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has commissioned a new elevated deck and the first phase of a 12-metre-wide South-end Foot Over Bridge (FOB) at Ghatkopar railway station to ease congestion for commuters. The move targets improved circulation at one of Mumbai's busiest suburban interchange stations and better connectivity between the Central Railway station and the metro. The additional circulation space is expected to speed passenger movement and enhance safety during peak hours.

The newly opened elevated deck, measuring 55 metres in length, links the existing metro FOB with the new South-end FOB and provides direct access to the metro station through a 6.1-metre-wide staircase. Under the first phase, passengers gain access to Platform one via the staircase and to Platforms two and three and Platform four through double-discharge landings. The elevated deck also connects to the existing eastern skywalk, enabling smoother transfers between suburban and metro services.

Remaining work will be undertaken in the next phase to complete the South-end FOB with additional staircases on Platforms two and three, Platform four and the eastern side, together with six escalators and four lifts to ensure barrier-free access for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and passengers carrying luggage. The finished facility will incorporate closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance, a modern public announcement system and improved passenger information and directional signage. The design and passenger flow recommendations were taken from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee).

MRVC said the chairman and managing director described the project as another important step in modernising Mumbai's suburban railway infrastructure and that integrated passenger facilities would strengthen metro-rail connectivity while relieving congestion. The corporation added that the work has been carried out with a focus on maintaining minimum disruption to train operations. Commuters are likely to see immediate improvements in station circulation as the facilities are put to use.
