A joint study by the Central Water Commission and ISRO’s Regional Remote Sensing Service Centre has identified 28.267 thousand hectares of waterlogged land and 12.933 thousand hectares of salt-affected soil in Andhra Pradesh across major and medium irrigation commands. The State Government has also highlighted the Budameru Diversion Channel, spanning 11.9 km, as a vulnerable stretch during floods.

Under the Flood Management Programme (FMP) component of the Flood Management and Border Areas Programme (FMBAP), the Centre extends financial support for flood control, anti-erosion works, drainage improvement and anti-sea-erosion measures. Funding is available only for new critical projects on main interstate rivers that meet a minimum investment threshold—Rs 1 billion for General Category States and Rs 0.5 billion for Special Category and Hilly States—and adopt modern technologies. Eligibility also requires implementation of Flood Plain Zoning through legislation or executive order.

The funding pattern is 60:40 for General Category States and 90:10 for Special Category and Hilly States. At present, no proposals from Andhra Pradesh are under consideration for assistance.
