Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 6–7 July 2025, joining fellow leaders for discussions on reforming global governance, strengthening multilateral cooperation, peace and security, development, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In the opening session, themed “Reform of Global Governance and Peace and Security”, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to enhancing the voice of the Global South. He called for urgent reforms to 20th-century global institutions like the UN Security Council, IMF, World Bank and WTO, to reflect 21st-century realities. Welcoming the Summit Declaration’s strong call for UN reform, Modi emphasised the need for an inclusive, multipolar world order.

Addressing the issue of terrorism, the Prime Minister described it as one of humanity’s gravest threats. Referring to the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, he called it not just an assault on India, but on humanity itself. Modi demanded harsh action against nations that fund, shelter or support terrorism and urged zero tolerance and consistency in the global fight. He thanked BRICS leaders for strongly condemning the attack.

He further raised concerns over ongoing global conflicts, from West Asia to Europe, and reiterated India’s long-standing call for dialogue and diplomacy in resolving such crises.

In the second session on “Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence”, the Prime Minister highlighted BRICS' diversity and multipolarity as its strengths during uncertain times. He made four key proposals: ensuring the BRICS New Development Bank follows a demand-driven, sustainable approach; creating a science and research repository for the Global South; securing resilient supply chains for critical minerals; and fostering responsible AI development—balancing innovation with governance.

The summit concluded with member nations adopting the 'Rio de Janeiro Declaration', marking consensus on key geopolitical and economic priorities for the bloc.
