Senior Union housing minister Manohar Lal sanctioned more than 42,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 at a programme in Sanwer, Indore district, on 20 June 2026, and 38,000 families performed grih pravesh of their newly constructed pucca houses. The event was attended by the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Dr Mohan Yadav, the state urban development minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, the minister of state Pratima Bagri and other ministers. The ceremony was presented as a major boost to the Housing for All initiative.

Sanction letters were issued to over 42,000 eligible beneficiaries under PMAY-U 2.0 with a central subsidy totalling Rs 10.5 billion (bn). The amount reflects the Government's financial support for urban housing and follows the allocation announced at the event. Grih pravesh ceremonies for 38,000 families took place across different districts of the State.

Madhya Pradesh continues to rank among the top performing states in PMAY-U implementation, with more than 1.039 million (mn) houses sanctioned and 0.908 million (mn) houses completed under PMAY-U and PMAY-U 2.0. The programme aims to provide safe and affordable housing for the urban poor and to strengthen access to basic services and livelihood opportunities. The scheme also mandates female ownership or joint ownership to promote women’s empowerment through asset ownership.

PMAY-U 2.0 is intended to extend coverage to additional 10 million (mn) EWS, LIG and MIG families, supporting housing with financial assistance of up to Rs 0.25 million (mn) per family to construct, purchase or rent a pucca house in urban areas. The Government has stated that the initiative seeks to ensure that no eligible urban family is left behind and to enhance dignity, security and hope through permanent homes. Continued rollout of the scheme is expected to consolidate gains in urban housing and improve quality of life for beneficiaries.
