SC to Hear BMC Plea to Cut Trees for Goregaon–Mulund Project
The Supreme Court will soon hear the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plea seeking permission to cut additional trees for the ongoing Goregaon–Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project in Mumbai. The civic body has argued that the tree clearance is essential to meet construction timelines for the critical east–west connectivity corridor.
The BMC informed the Court that compensatory afforestation measures have been planned to offset the environmental impact. The project, aimed at easing congestion and improving traffic flow between Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs, includes a 4.7-km twin tunnel under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.
The petition is part of the ongoing judicial oversight concerning environmental safeguards in major urban infrastructure projects.
