Tamil Nadu Highways Seek Nod To Widen Road To Thirupattur Temple

The state highways department has submitted a proposal to the government seeking permission and allocation of funds to widen the road leading to the Brahamapureeswarar temple in Thirupattur. The Puthanampatti–Karattampatti road falls under the other district road category and is maintained by the state highways department, Thuraiyur sub-division. The road is 10.8 kilometres long and is included in the comprehensive road infrastructure development programme.

Of the 10.8 kilometres, a four-kilometre stretch was widened a few months ago at a cost of Rs 90 million (mn). Work on the remaining six point eight-kilometre section from Subramaniyapuram to Illuppaiyur was abandoned owing to several reasons, leaving a narrow stretch that impedes flow. Devotees visiting the temple, tourism enthusiasts and local residents have urged the department to revive the stalled widening project.

Locals noted that the road is used by pilgrims from Namakkal, Musiri, Thuraiyur and Thammampatti, and that residents of more than four villages along the route depend on it for daily movement. One resident observed that office-goers, school and college students and others travel to the taluk headquarters at Thuraiyur each day and that an upgraded carriageway would be more convenient and safer. The appeal highlights both routine mobility needs and potential benefits for regional tourism. The narrow condition was said to cause delays and safety concerns during peak periods.

An assistant divisional engineer of state highways, Thuraiyur sub-division, reported that a proposal had been sent to the government and that the department was expecting a favourable reply. He indicated that several roads in the Thuraiyur division are awaiting widening and development. Once funds are allocated, the department will commence the widening and improvement process.
