The Kerala government has decided to sanction Rs 100 million (Rs 100 mn) to the Kochi Municipal Corporation for rectification works along a three-point-one-kilometre stretch of Sahodharan Ayyappan Road from Vyttila Metro Station to Manorama Junction. The decision followed a nudge from the Kerala High Court that was hearing a public interest litigation concerning repeated sinking of road surfaces near metro pillar pile caps. The sanction was disclosed in an affidavit filed before a division bench of the High Court.

The affidavit recorded that an Expert Committee had assessed the required rectification and estimated the total cost at Rs 100 mn including GST. The submission indicated that the committee had concluded that the magnitude of work exceeded the financial capacity of the municipal body and had suggested State assistance. The Court had earlier directed immediate corrective action to address hazardous road conditions along metro corridors in Kochi.

An order dated ninth July had recorded the committee recommendations and on seventh August the High Court had asked the Finance Department to place on record the position regarding release of funds. The Finance Department informed the Court that it agreed to release the estimated amount after completion of the procedural formalities required for commencement of the work. The High Court recorded the submission of the senior government pleader and directed the Cochin Corporation to file an affidavit indicating steps taken for commencement.

The case is registered as Pauly Vadakkan v State of Kerala and Others in WP(PIL) 81 of 2026 and the Court has required periodic updates on action taken. Petitioners had highlighted multiple incidents of accidents and alleged loss of life due to surface failures near the metro pillar pile caps. Implementation will proceed once the municipal corporation completes tender and formal clearance processes and the sanctioned funds are released. Authorities will monitor the works to improve road safety along the metro corridor.
