Since its introduction prior to India's attainment of independence from the British, the red double-decker buses operated by Mumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) have played a crucial role in the city's public transportation system.

It is mentioned that the double-decker buses have featured in numerous Bollywood and Hollywood films since 1937 and have come to symbolize the character of the city. They hold a significant place in the childhood memories of millions of individuals.

During its peak, Mumbai had approximately 900 of these diesel-powered double-decker buses in operation. However, due to various factors, including their high operational costs, their numbers dwindled.

It was noted that since 2008, BEST had stopped accepting new double-deckers. Alongside their regular commuter services, BEST also operated three open-deck double-decker buses for sightseeing purposes for the past three decades. A BEST spokesperson conveyed that these buses would also be retired from service by October 5.

The report highlights that the new electric double-decker buses will now be the sole type of double-deckers operating in the city. Currently, there are 25 of these buses in operation. Upon witnessing the older fuel-powered double-decker buses being taken out of service, many passengers were deeply emotional, and some even shed tears.
