Delhi Metro Plans Elevated Corridor To Ease South Delhi Traffic

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has unveiled plans for an elevated corridor project aimed at easing traffic congestion in South Delhi, targeting Badarpur and other heavily congested stretches. The project is intended to provide an alternative to surface road travel and to integrate with existing metro lines. DMRC presented preliminary route options and station locations to municipal authorities and transport planners. The announcement follows studies of traffic flows and commuter demand in the area.

The proposed corridor will consist of continuous elevated tracks with interchanges to existing lines to enhance network connectivity. Design considerations include dedicated lanes for express services, integration with bus terminals and pedestrian access at key nodes, and measures to reduce construction time. Planners outlined phased construction to limit disruption to traffic and essential services. The design will also address last-mile connectivity and station accessibility for a broad range of commuters.

Officials provided an estimated cost for the project and indicated that funding would combine central and state allocations alongside possible private participation. The programme will require land acquisition, utility relocation and regulatory clearances before construction can commence. Environmental assessments and traffic management plans will form part of the approval process. Timelines for ground works and commissioning were described as dependent on statutory approvals and funding releases.

Authorities said the corridor will reduce congestion on arterial roads, shorten journey times for commuters and encourage a shift to public transport. Local administrations will coordinate traffic diversions, compensation arrangements and community engagement during construction. The DMRC noted potential challenges such as construction phase disturbance and the need for seamless integration with existing infrastructure.
