Metro Railway has proposed a new corridor linking Kolkata Station at Chitpur with Karunamoyee in Salt Lake. The authority has initiated a feasibility study and ground survey for the 8.8 kilometre corridor ahead of a visit by the Minister of Railways, during which several rail projects are expected to be discussed with the state government. The proposal marks a strategic addition to the urban transport network and aims to address growing commuter demand.

Kolkata is seeing its first fresh metro proposal in nearly 15 years, while the city’s original Blue Line began operations 42 years ago and has since been extended. Many other corridors were conceived around 17 years ago, but remain under construction or pending completion. Recently, the Pink Line between Baranagar and Barrackpore was revived after lying inactive for 16 years, and the Green Line, whose construction began in 2008, became fully operational last year when the final 2.4-kilometre section was inaugurated.

Officials have indicated the new line will pass near Khudiram Bose Road, the Bagjola Canal and the Number Six Island Circle in Salt Lake, though precise alignment will be finalised after surveys conclude. Deliberations are underway on whether the corridor should be entirely elevated or include underground segments, with detailed planning to follow the feasibility report. Project timing and approvals remain subject to government clearance and technical studies.

If approved, the line is expected to provide a direct connection between the main rail terminus and the planned business and residential hubs in Salt Lake, easing transfers and reducing reliance on road transport. Planners estimate the route could shorten journey times and integrate with the expanding metro network to serve thousands of commuters daily. The proposal therefore, stands to strengthen connectivity across Kolkata and support the city’s longer term transit objectives.
