The Maharashtra government has approved a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Pune Metro Phase 2 extensions, connecting Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi (Vitthalwadi) (Corridor 2B). The decision, cleared on 28 October, defines the financial and operational responsibilities of all stakeholders and authorises Maha-Metro to fund the project through Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), additional Floor Space Index (FSI), and the development of government land.

According to officials, any expenditure exceeding the approved Detailed Project Report (DPR) will require prior clearance from the State Finance Department, while additional costs will be covered through Maha-Metro’s Dedicated Urban Transport Fund.

The Phase 2 expansion, sanctioned by the Union government in July 2025, will extend the Pune Metro network by 12.75 kilometres, featuring 13 elevated stations. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 36.26 billion, to be jointly funded by the Central and State governments.

Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) at Maha-Metro, said, “Signing the tri-party agreement marks an important milestone. The state government has approved the MoU and forwarded it to the Centre for final clearance. Once approved, we will move to the next stage of fund mobilisation and consultant appointments.”

The first phase of the Pune Metro, approved in 2017 and fully operational since September 2024, covers 33.28 kilometres with 31 stations. Additionally, work is progressing on two other extensions — PCMC to Nigdi and Swargate to Katraj — which together will add over 9 kilometres to the growing network.

The new Phase 2 routes are expected to enhance connectivity across Pune’s rapidly expanding suburbs, reduce traffic congestion, and support the city’s goal of developing a sustainable, multimodal urban transport system.
