Mumbai’s metro network is set for a major expansion with the proposed Metro-14 line, connecting Vikhroli/Kanjurmarg in eastern Mumbai to Badlapur in Thane district. Spanning between 38 km and 45 km, the project promises to drastically cut the current 1.5–2 hour road commute to a matter of minutes.

The line will feature a mix of underground, elevated and at-grade stretches — running underground from Kanjurmarg to Ghansoli, before shifting to elevated tracks up to Badlapur. Key stations under consideration include Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli, LBS Marg, Chikoli, Shil Phata, Mahape, Ghansoli, Airoli, Turbhe, Digha, Ambernath and Badlapur.

Initial cost estimates place the project between Rs 135 billion and Rs 180 billion. It will be developed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been approved and peer-reviewed by IIT Bombay. Construction is expected to commence within a year.

Projected daily ridership stands at 700,000 passengers, with planned interchanges at Line 4 (Wadala–Thane), Line 6 (Jogeshwari–Vikhroli–Kanjurmarg) and Kanjurmarg suburban railway station. The line also aligns with Transit-Oriented Development zones such as Chikoli.

Specific details on train schedules, ticketing and fare structures are yet to be released. Authorities are awaiting environmental clearances, as the alignment passes close to sensitive areas including Parsik Hills and the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary.
