The construction of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Metro station on the Mumbai Metro-3 Aqua Line is nearing completion. Photos shared by X user @haldilal reveal the station’s striking arched entrance, glasswork and modern façade.
Known as the Aqua Line, Metro 3 is Mumbai’s first fully underground corridor. It spans 33.5 km between Cuffe Parade (Colaba) and Aarey, with 27 stations — 26 underground and one at grade.
The Three Phases of Metro-3
- Phase 1 – Aarey to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC): The 12.69 km section opened to the public on 7 October 2024.
- Phase 2A – BKC to Worli: The 9.8 km section with six stations — Dharavi, Shitaladevi Temple, Dadar, Siddhivinayak Temple, Worli and Acharya Atre Chowk — was launched on 9 May 2025.
- Phase 3 – Worli to Cuffe Parade: The final stretch will include Science Museum, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai Central, Grant Road, Girgaon, Kalbadevi, CSMT, Hutatma Chowk, Churchgate, Vidhan Bhavan and Cuffe Parade stations.
Why Metro-3 Matters to Officegoers
Metro 3 connects key business hubs such as BKC, Worli and Dadar, as well as providing airport access and the SEEPZ tech park. It offers fast, direct and uninterrupted underground travel through the heart of Mumbai, reducing commute times significantly:
- Aarey to Cuffe Parade: 60 minutes by Metro compared to 120–180+ minutes by road during peak hours
- BKC to Worli: 13–15 minutes by Metro versus 45–60 minutes by road
- Andheri to Cuffe Parade: 45–50 minutes by Metro versus 90–120 minutes by road
- CSIA Terminal 2 to BKC: 10–12 minutes by Metro versus 30–45 minutes by taxi in traffic
Being fully underground, Line 3 bypasses road congestion, traffic signals, delays and monsoon flooding, allowing seamless north–south travel.
Previously, commuting from Andheri to Fort or Cuffe Parade required navigating a maze of highways, traffic bottlenecks and switching between multiple transport modes — autos, buses, trains and taxis — resulting in journeys of up to 90 minutes.
