PM Modi to Launch First 14.6-km Chennai Metro Phase 2 Stretch
The section belongs to Corridor 4, also known as Yellow Line, and runs between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani. It is the first part of the Phase 2 network to secure approval for commercial operations. The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety cleared the stretch in February, allowing preparations for the launch to proceed. The clearance followed months of preparations by the metro authorities.
The corridor will eventually become part of an east-west metro link connecting Chennai's expanding western suburbs with the wider public transport network. Its opening is expected to offer an alternative to congested arterial roads in the western part of the city and improve access to existing Metro services. The project is part of the larger Phase 2 expansion planned to extend the city's rapid transit coverage.
At Vadapalani, commuters are expected to use a skywalk linking the new alignment with the existing Vadapalani Metro station. Entry and exit works at the interchange are still under way. The interchange is intended to allow passengers to move between the new corridor and existing Metro services.
State BJP sources have indicated that Modi may also inaugurate Vellore airport during the one-day programme. The party plans to receive him when he arrives in Chennai, but no official party events have been scheduled so far. The metro inauguration would mark the first operational opening under the city's Phase 2 network, following regulatory clearance and preparatory work.
