17 roads in Delhi to get a makeover

On Monday, Delhi's deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia gave his approval to Rs 13.58 crore projects for the beautification and strengthening of 17 roads in Tilak Nagar, Vikaspuri, and Janakpuri. A total road length of 12.83 kilometres will be covered under this project.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has expedited the work of road strengthening and beautification across Delhi. The department is utilising modern technologies and global standards of street design to provide a new look to city streets. The department is especially concentrating on beautifying major city roads to deliver commuters with a pleasant experience along with road strengthening and maintenance, Sisodia said.

Recently, PWD officials thoroughly inspected these roads to assess their requirements. After the inspection, the projects were readied for government approval. As part of this project, PWD is also stressing road markings, plantations etc, officials said.

During the inspection of these regions, we found that residents had to encounter a lot of inconvenience due to old deteriorated roads. A new road maintenance project is being initiated in these regions to avoid any inconvenience to the public. This will enhance the interconnectivity in the region and will save time for commuters.

In November 2019, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal approved the 16 PWD road redesign as part of a pilot project which, if victorious, would be repeated on 540 kilometres of Delhi roads.

The roads where redesigning is going on include stretches along Ring Road from AIIMS to Ashram; Ring Road from Mayapuri to Moti Bagh; Narwana Road-Mother Dairy to Punch Mahal Niwas; Britannia Chowk to Outer Ring Road West Enclave, Pitampura; Wazirpur Depot Crossing (NSP) to Rithala Metro Station; Vikas Marg-Laxmi Nagar Chungi to Karkari More; and Shivdaspuri Marg and Patel Road.

Earlier this month, Kejriwal fixed an October deadline for the beautification and redesigning of 16 roads across Delhi where work is ongoing to get them on par with European standards.
