Bharat Forge To Build Private Marine Gas Turbine Hub In Visakhapatnam

Bharat Forge (BFL), through its Aerospace division, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish India's first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine (MGT) repair, overhaul and indigenous development complex at Visakhapatnam on around 80 acres within the Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor. The MoU was executed by Guru Biswal, chief executive officer of the aerospace unit, in the presence of the Raksha Mantri, Rajnath Singh, and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, at the Aerospace and Defence Investment Conclave in Puttaparthy.

The Visakhapatnam facility will be co-located with the Naval Dockyard, INS Eksila, and the Eastern Naval Command headquarters and is intended to bring propulsion sustainment capability into the private sector for the first time. Phase one is planned to deliver a full MGT repair and overhaul complex comprising hot section restoration of blades, vanes and combustion liners, component manufacturing, a nondestructive evaluation laboratory and a 72-hour turnaround capability for the Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.

Phase two will establish a private-sector Marine Gas Turbine development and assembly hall and a full-spectrum hot test cell scalable across all propulsion ratings, and will enable the development and qualification of an indigenous MGT in India. The facility is also intended to serve as a regional repair and overhaul hub for friendly nation navies and is expected to create around 750 direct and indirect employment opportunities, addressing recent overseas supply chain disruptions that have affected fleet repair cycles and operational readiness.

Company representatives described the project as a strategic step towards defence self-reliance that aligns with national initiatives such as Sushakt Bharat, Surakshit Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047. Bharat Forge is a Pune-based multinational and its Aerospace division focuses on design, development and manufacture of critical aerospace components, leveraging forging, precision machining and sub-assembly integration to support expanded domestic capability in defence and marine sectors.
