At the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2025 on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar announced that the Karnataka government is exploring the development of a second airport in the southern part of Bengaluru. The update came during the event where Chief Minister Siddaramaiah unveiled the Karnataka Space Technology, IT and Startup Policy 2025–2030.

Earlier in March, the government shortlisted three potential locations for the new international airport: two sites near Kaggalipura and Harohalli along Kanakapura Road, and another on Kunigal Road in north Bengaluru.

Opening the summit, Siddaramaiah highlighted Karnataka’s long-standing leadership in technology policy, recalling that the State launched India’s first IT policy in 1997. He noted that the new policy seeks to position Karnataka as a global hub for innovation, deep technology and advanced research.

Shivakumar, speaking at the same event, reiterated that the State is investing more than Rs1 trillion to upgrade Bengaluru’s infrastructure. Major projects include a 40-km twin tunnel costing Rs425 billion, a 41-km double-decker Metro valued at Rs180 billion, and the 74-km Bengaluru Business Corridor estimated at Rs270 billion. He also announced a dedicated NRI Secretariat, a residential township for NRIs and an international complex for global businesses. Additionally, the government is developing a 9,000-acre AI-focused city near Bidadi.

Siddaramaiah added that the new Space Technology Policy aims to make Karnataka India’s leading space-technology hub, targeting 50 per cent of the national space-tech market and 5 per cent of the global market over the next decade.
