Coal India October Supplies Rise 19% to Record 70.3 mn t

Coal India recorded its highest-ever monthly coal supplies in October, crossing 70 mn t for the first time as the state-owned miner increased production and evacuation to meet rising demand from thermal power plants. Supplies rose 19 per cent from 59.2 mn t in October 2025.

The company’s deliveries to the power sector also reached an all-time monthly high of 57.1 mn t, up from 48 mn t a year earlier. The figure exceeded the previous record of 56.5 mn t set in May 2024 and surpassed Coal India’s earlier overall monthly supply record of 69.4 mn t, achieved in March.

The performance came as several power plants reported critically low coal stocks and as India’s coal imports declined. Total coal imports fell 5.83 per cent to 104.57 mn t in August from 111.05 mn t a year earlier, according to a statement from the coal ministry. Imports for blending at domestic coal-based power plants dropped 35.23 per cent to 3 mn t, while total power plant imports declined 6.39 per cent to 21.32 mn t.

Imported coal’s share of India’s total coal consumption decreased to 19.3 per cent in August from 21.2 per cent a year earlier. Coking coal imports, an important raw material for steel production, fell 4.18 per cent to 27.3 mn t, although the ministry said demand continued to depend on the quality and characteristics required by steel manufacturers.

Coal India’s production reached a monthly record of 67.2 mn t in October, 19 per cent higher than the 56.38 mn t produced a year earlier and above the previous October record of 62.47 mn t set in 2024. Railway evacuation also reached a new milestone, with average power-sector loading at 310 rakes a day. Subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields crossed 20 mn t in monthly supplies for the first time, supporting the company’s overall performance.
