MCL Improves E-Waste Management Under Special Campaign 6

Mahanadi Coalfields (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India, has launched an e-waste management and cleanliness drive across its headquarters and operational areas in Odisha under Special Campaign 6. The campaign is scheduled to continue until October 31, 2026, with measures focused on responsible disposal, workplace hygiene and sustainable mining practices.

MCL has installed dedicated e-waste collection kiosks at its establishments to support the safe disposal of discarded electronic items. Material collected through the kiosks will be sent through authorised recycling channels, with the process intended to reduce the risk of soil and water contamination.

The company is also conducting community awareness programmes on the environmental and health risks associated with improper e-waste disposal. The outreach forms part of the broader campaign to encourage responsible waste handling among employees and communities connected with its operations.

During the first week of the implementation phase, MCL cleaned 73 of the 240 identified sites. The work covered more than 306,600 sq ft, against a campaign target of 1,000,000 sq ft. The cleanup programme is being carried out across the company’s headquarters and operational locations.

The initiative also includes a target to dispose of 600 t of scrap. MCL has so far disposed of 350 heavy earth-moving machinery batteries, generating revenue while supporting resource recovery. The company said the campaign would reinforce its focus on cleanliness, health, safety and environmentally responsible mining across Odisha.
