India Needs Stronger Domestic Oil Exploration, Official Says

India needs to strengthen domestic oil exploration and technological capabilities to protect its energy security as geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global supply chains increasingly affect energy flows and prices, Oil India Director (Finance) Abhijit Majumder said.

Speaking at the Shillong curtain raiser of India Energy Week (IEW) 2027, Majumder said the global energy industry was facing mounting pressure from demographic growth, rising energy demand, geopolitical tensions and economic development. He said disruptions to major energy corridors could quickly affect energy flows, prices and economies worldwide.

Majumder cited recent disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz as an example of how instability in one region can create a wider threat to global energy security. The comments come as countries seek to reduce exposure to external supply shocks and improve the resilience of their energy systems.

He also highlighted the potential of India’s offshore and deep-water energy resources. According to Majumder, improved geological data, modern technology, risk-sharing mechanisms and supporting infrastructure could help unlock these resources and expand domestic supplies.

Referring to the National Offshore Exploration Scheme, Samudra Manthan, Majumder said the initiative could contribute to expanding India’s exploration capabilities. He described India Energy Week as an important platform linking policymakers, industry leaders, technology providers and investors on energy security, innovation and changing demand patterns.

The 2026 edition of IEW attracted more than 75,000 attendees, 700 exhibiting companies and delegates from over 120 countries. The Shillong programme was held alongside a curtain raiser in Kolkata attended by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Organisers said the Shillong event marked the first step towards IEW 2027, which will bring together stakeholders from across the global energy sector.

Minister G Kishan Reddy Says No Coal Shortage Despite Higher Power Demand

Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy said India was not facing a coal shortage despite higher demand from thermal power plants, monsoon-related disruptions in mining operations and lower hydropower generation. He said coal was being supplied to power stations through railway rakes and road transport. Reddy made the remarks on Monday on the sidelines of the Assocham-organised Angul Aluminium Roadshow in Kolkata. His comments came amid reports of alleged supply constraints at some power plants, although he said the temporary interruptions should not be interpreted as a broader shortage. ..
