The Madurai Corporation plans to build a facility at the Vellaikal dumpyard that can turn municipal solid waste into torrefied (dried and environmentally beneficial) charcoal. Torrefied charcoal can be used to generate electricity in thermal power plants in combination with fuel. Once the project is approved, Madurai would be the second city to have such a plant after Varanasi.
