Akhil K Gupta, CEO, SP E&CWhat did it take for the remarkable transformation of Pragati Maidan into the iconic Bharat Mandapam, a world-class Integrated Exhibition cum Convention Center (IECC) In this interview with Akhil K Gupta, CEO, SP E&C, SHRIYAL SETHUMADHAVAN delves into the intricacies of this monumental project, from its initial concept to its significant role in hosting the G20 summit, showcasing India’s prowess in delivering complex and globally benchmarked constructions. How was the project infrastructure planned for the G20 meet, and what was the initial brief? The comprehensive revamp plan of Pragati Maidan was conceptualised by the Indian Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) following the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015. The objective was to rejuvenate the complex by demolishing the old facilities and developing a globally iconic Integrated Exhibition cum Convention Center (IECC). The master layout, under phase 1, covered 84 acre and was planned to accommodate a Convention Center with a capacity of 7,000 people, six large-sized exhibition halls, a 3,000-person capacity amphitheater, an administration building, a covered skywalk, F&B kiosks, ticket plazas, and external development. The scope of work was extensive, including high-end interiors and exteriors, the latest MEPF and ICT systems, high-level acoustics requirements, technology-driven AV systems, stage systems, lighting, musical fountains with light and sound shows, arts and sculptures, signage, landscaping, and street furniture, all to ensure that Bharat Mandapam remains one of the top convention centers in the world.Highlight the main challenges your team faced during the redevelopment and how were these overcome? The G20 summit gathered world leaders and dignitaries from 40 countries, including the 20 member states. This event was unprecedented in India, necessitating our understanding and adaptation to globally benchmarked design and construction standards for such venues. Engineering the complex architectural concept itself posed a major challenge, and achieving the unique geometry with a large structural span presented an even greater obstacle, requiring us to implement innovative construction methods on-site. Meeting the expectations of all stakeholders, especially the security requirements of participating states, was no easy feat. We had to revise and re-engineer the design multiple times to accommodate last-minute requests and requirements. What innovative construction techniques were used for the project’s success? The earlier facilities, constructed between 1957 and 1972, were insufficient for hosting large international events. The new complex has cutting-edge conference facilities that are essential for events like the G20 Summit. The design’s complexity forced us to innovate, implementing a top-down construction approach. The roof featured long-span trusses of 120 m with a clear span of 60 m, and the lower floors had comparatively lower spas. The roof trusses had to be fabricated in multiple segments due to their weight (ranging from 200 MT to 600 MT). The columns supporting the roof trusses were completed first, and then high-capacity cranes were used to lift and erect them simultaneously. Subsequently, we worked on the lower floors and beams, allowing us to finish critical structural work early and make way for other activities. What were the unique architectural and design elements? The Bharat Mandapam is constructed as a state-of-the-art iconic complex, drawing inspiration from the rich architectural heritage of Lutyens Delhi. A Conch Shell, partially floating in the waters of Yamuna River was used as a metaphor to depict life in water and on earth, reflecting India’s ancient cultural heritage, and bringing auspiciousness to the Centre. Artworks like ‘Yoga Asanas’ and ‘Surya Shakti’ resonate with India’s ancient culture while emphasising their relevance in today's world. Landscape features such as musical fountains, water bodies, and streams provide visual spectacle while maintaining tranquility. Furnishings, like the main auditorium's carpet, are themed around the peacock, India's national bird. On the technological front, Bharat Mandapam is an intelligent building with centralised monitoring and control centers integrated with high-tech systems. What sustainability measures were taken during construction? The IECC is designed and constructed to attain a GRIHA 4-star rating, emphasising sustainability and minimising environmental impacts. Our conscious approach included preserving mature trees, planting native and naturalised species, reusing topsoil, utilising treated water in construction, and incorporating recycled wood. The project also integrates a comprehensive solid waste management system with centralised waste segregation, dedicated hazardous waste storage, organic waste composting, 420 KW of solar power, and 13,500 litre of solar water heating for kitchen needs. Leveraging advanced building management and automation systems, we achieved a remarkable 40 per cent reduction in energy consumption compared to benchmark levels. How does the Bharat Mandapam redevelopment contribute to the growth of the Indian construction industry?Bharat Mandapam has showcased globally the prowess of Indian construction companies to deliver complex and multi-faceted world-class projects. The complex provides a state-of-the-art venue for holding international events and, thus, will provide a boost to event tourism, bringing in significant economic and social benefits, thus creating opportunities for more developments. SP E&C, over its history of 158 years, has showcased its capabilities for building landmark and iconic projects, and is proud of its contribution towards the creation of ‘Bharat Mandapam’. This facility has set a new benchmark for others in the industry to follow.
