Tamil Nadu govt announces six more corporations, 28 municipalities

Ahead of urban local body elections slated in a few months, the Tamil Nadu government announced that the state would have six more municipal corporations and 28 more municipalities.

Tamil Nadu will have six new corporations and 28 new municipalities, with this, the number of municipal corporations will go up from 15 to 21. Urban Development Minister K N Nehru announced this in the assembly.

The newly added municipal corporations are Kumbakonam, Tambaram, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Karur, and Sivakasi.

Three municipalities—Chengalpettu, Mannargudi, and Poonamalle and four municipal corporations—Trichy, Thanjavur, Hosur, and Nagercoil—would be expanded after merging the town and village panchayats with them.

The Urban Development minister, however, clarified that the village panchayats ward members that will be merged with the municipal corporations and municipalities would remain in their position till their term finishes.
